Information & Dates

There will be two participation tracks for the 2023-2024 Challenge cycle – in-person and virtual. Team Coordinators must select a participation track when they register their team. This selection may not be changed unless local health guidelines change for the area in which a team will participate.

School Registration is now closed.

I. School Qualifier: Pending on which track is chosen by most of the members. Virtual track doesn't require a school level qualifier. Students move on to regional challenge directly.

II. Regional Challenge

1) Video Round: October 3 2023 - March 22, 2024

Teams collaborate to create a video based on a prompt exploring chemistry concepts that will be evaluated by a panel of judges. All teams will create and submit a video. Click here to view 2021-2022 state winners videos.

2) In-Person Round: January 19, 2024-March 10, 2024

Virtual Academic Round: March 2/6, 2024

Teams participating in the virtual track compete in the virtual Regional Challenge on one of Mar 2/6 (selected during Team Submission). Teams may submit answers as a group or answer questions individually. If team members answer questions individually, their scores will be averaged

III. National challenge: June, 2024

You Be The Chemist (YBTC)

The You Be The Chemist Challenge® is an interactive academic contest that encourages students in grades 5-8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications.

YBTC is an exam selected. After registration,  students will form a team and take a local challenge at school if needed. The top teams will join the Regional YBTC challenge. This official event will be announced later in the year.

Commitment
  • 1-2 hours of work outside of school per week

2019-2020 Awards

On 03/01/20, three EMS Science teams competed in Regional YBTC(You Be The Chemist) and won 2nd, 5th, and 9th places of 15 teams. Team 1 advanced to National level competition. Congratulation!
