Information & Dates

• National Science Bowl is a national academic competition. The teams compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format on various science disciplines, including biology, earth science, physics, energy, and math.

• School Written Qualifier: Evergreen Middle School Commons, Nov 1st, 2024
• 2024-2025 Club weekly Google classroom: hosted by volunteer coaches from Eastlake High School: Alon Ragoler (lead coach), Derek Yao, Sunehri Nog and Keshav Mohan. Weekly schedule: TBD.
• Cost: $5 per student. Club fee is non-refundable. Parents cover additional hotel and transportation fees if student/team make to the next rounds.

• Team selection criteria:
  • Each NSB Test participant will specify (up to) three topics as their preferred topics among the following four subjects. Each student will then write their preferred topics test on the NSB Qualifier day (Nov 1st), and will get a rank on their topics.
  • NSB Organizer Team will sort by rank order in each topic, and assign the topper in each topic to Team 1, and remove the name from the rank list (as the students are placed) in this order: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science and Math.
    We will then do the same for Team 2 & Team 3, i.e. the second ranked student for each topic will join Team 2, and the 3rd ranked student in each topic will join Team 3.
  • For the remaining students, we will then order the students based on the added rank of their top 2 topics. For example, if a student is 3rd in Math & 4th in Life Science, their added rank is 7. The top ranked student will be the 5th student in Team 1. The next ranked student will be the 5th student in Team 2. The next ranked student will be the 5th student in Team 3.

National Science Bowl (NSB)

The National Science Bowl (NSB) is a high school and middle school science knowledge competition using a quiz bowl format held in the United States. A buzzer system like those seen on popular television game shows is used to signal an answer.

NSB teams are formed through rank testing at school. Students take exams in different subject areas. The top students are then selected for positions on the teams. If throughout the year a student drops from a team, the next ranked student will be offered their position. 

Test papers are prepared by EHS volunteer coaches and selected from NSB sample question bank with different difficulties. To get prepared for the qualifier test, please click here for the NSB sample questions.

Based on written qualifier results, the top 3 teams will participate in regional NSB challenge in Portland. A team consists of 5 students. 

Commitment

• Attend one round qualifier
• 1-2 hours of work outside of school per week
• 1 parent coach to manage the team
  • Coach coordinates parents, students and communicates with club chair
  • Coach coordinate with club chair to registers team online and travel
  • Coach organizes and supervises outside of school meetings
• Potential travel to state competition or even national competition based on qualification
