EMS NSB Selection Process 2022-2023

General Rules

  • After registration ends, club chair will send confirmation emails to club members for further instruction.
  • Club members who wish to qualify for NSB Regionals must take a written school qualifier.
  • Qualifiers will be hosted by Science club chair and proctored by EMS PTSA without conflicts of interest.
  • Teams will be selected and formed according to the ranking of the school qualifier's total scores. Top 4 students form Team 1; students in 5th-8th place form Team 2 etc. After teams are formed, each team has to select a parent coach to organize the team to prepare for the state challenge.
  • Weighted average method will be used to calculate the qualifier test score. The weight is 1:3:3:3 for Math, Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science respectively.
  • Qualifier questions are mostly from NSB sample questions and provided by neutral high school volunteers without conflicts of interest.
  • If the selected team drops off, the next team on the ranking list will fill in. If any member of the selected team drops off, the team coach needs to find a replacement within the school qualifier participant list.
  • For students not qualified for the NSB regional, they are encouraged to keep learning science in the weekly Google Classroom Science Club provides. Students will be assigned to read some materials of science subjects and gather at Google classroom for discussion and little quiz every week.
  • Dates of the written school qualifier will be announced as early as possible, giving students at least one month or more of preparation time.
  • Team Selection must be made public.
  • The science team provides email reminders before the qualifier. Reminders would be published on Facebook and the school page.
